What is a Tree Hazard Assessment?
A Tree Hazard Assessment is just that — an estimation of the level of risk that a tree poses to persons or property due to failure to thrive. Risk Assessments are completed by certified arborists who inspect the physical condition of the tree and the area surrounding it. If a risk is identified by this assessment, recommendations on how to improve health and safety are made (sometimes this may mean complete tree removal).
When are Tree Risk Assessments required?
As a property owner, it is your responsibility to ensure that the trees on your property are in good condition. If a tree develops any kind of disease or defect (i.e. insect infestation, mechanical injury etc.), it can easily become a hazard. The purpose of a Tree Risk Assessment, as mentioned before, is to analyze the cost-benefit relationship of each tree and take measures to prevent damage from failure.
There are three different Tree Risk Assessments levels:
Level 1 – Limited Visual Assessment
A limited visual assessment gathers information about designated areas and the trees within them, usually from a distance. It is a rapid assessment, meant to gather general information as quickly as possible. A Level 1 Assessment is mostly commonly utilized in cases of extreme high risk (i.e. a severely damage/falling tree). A Limited Visual Assessment may also determine if further evaluation by an arborist is required.
Level 2 – Basic Assessment
A Basic Assessment gives arborists a closer look at the potentially hazardous tree/trees in question. This is typically where we start if a client requests a Tree Hazard Assessment. Probes and other specialized tools are used to inspect the overall condition of a tree and evaluate if a more comprehensive inspection needs to be completed. The Basic Assessment records any defects and makes suggestions on how to mitigate risk.
Level 3 – Advanced Assessment
The final, and most comprehensive level is the Advanced Assessment. The entire tree from the roots to the crown are thoroughly inspected to determine its overall health. Arborists utilize a variety of equipment and processes for this assessment, including resistographs, compressed-air tools, and sonic tomography. Depending on the testing results, we may recommend maintenance or complete removal.
