What Are Tree Injections?

Tree Injections are just as simple as they sound – they are shots for your trees. A solution is directly injected into the trunk so it can be transported to the rest of the tree via the vascular system. These injections are used to treat disease, eliminate invasive pests, and deliver essential nutrients to correct deficiencies.

How Do Tree Injections Work?

Tree Injections are a highly effective treatment methods for trees suffering from disease, infestation, or extreme nutrient deficiency.

Small holes are drilled into the trunk of the tree, going through the bark and other outer layers (such as the phloem and cambium) and stopping at the xylem. The xylem contains a sapwood layer that is responsible for transporting water and minerals throughout the entire tree. The appropriate formula, as determined by one of our trained technicians, is then pumped into the tree. The xylem vascular system does all the work after that, ensuring the product is distributed from the roots of the tree all the way to the canopy. Unlike other treatments, Tree Injections can provide protection for up to two years.

Common Pests and Diseases That Can Be Treated with Systemic Injections

Fire Blight

Fire Blight

Fire Blight is a bacterium that infects the tree through blossoms, leaves, or stem wounds. It is extremely detrimental to fruit producing trees (so much so that it has the capability of wiping out an entire orchard in a single growing season if not immediately treated). Tree injections, when applied in early spring, are highly effective at treating Fire Blight.

Large Poplar Borer (saperda Carcharias)

Poplar Borer

The Poplar Borer is an invasive beetle species that lays its eggs in the bark of the tree (typically aspens). When the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the bark and sap until they begin pupation. Fully matured Poplar Borer’s finally emerge in summer months and strip trees of their leaves and new shoots. Tree injections are one of the best ways to treat for Poplar Borer.

Bronze Birch Borer

Bronze Birth Borer

Bronze Birch Borers is a common wood borer species that is detrimental to all birch species in Toronto, and throughout North America. The larvae cause the most damage to the trees by feasting on the xylem vascular layer that is beneath the bark. Tree Injections effectively kill both the larvae and adult beetles of the Bronze Birth Borer.

Birch Leaf Miner

Birch Leaf Miner

The Birch Leaf Miner is one of the most common insects that affect birch trees. Tree Injections are effective at controlling Birch Leaf Miners because of the systemic spread of insecticide through the entire tree, including the leaves that the larvae feast on.

Aphids

Aphids

Aphids are small, but devastating insects. These little sapsuckers feed on leaf buds and new shoots, weakening the tree and making it more susceptible to disease. Additionally, aphids secrete a sticky substance called “aphid honeydew” that attracts other pests, such as ants. Insecticides that can be directly injected provide the most comprehensive protection against aphids.

Giant Woodwasp, Banded Horntail, Or Greater Horntail (urocerus Gigas), Female

Spruce Sawfly

Spruce Sawflies get their name from the sharp dagger-like part on their head that they use to cut holes in trees and deposit eggs. They are efficient eaters and will almost entirely clean the needles off a spruce tree. Systemic insecticide applied with tree injections successfully control Spruce Sawflies.

Psylla (hemiptera: Psyllidae) Is The Dangerous Pest Of Different Plants

Cottony Psyllid

Cottony Psyllids are small, soft-bodied insects that resemble aphids. This highly invasive insect species infects both Manchurian and Black Ash trees. Insecticide treatments, such as Tree Injections, have proven to be highly effective in dealing with Cottony Psyllid.

Emerald Ash Borer

Emerald Ash Borer

If a tree becomes infested with Emerald Ash Borer, it is almost guaranteed to die. The larvae tunnel under the bark and disrupt the flow of essential nutrients throughout the tree. Your first indication of an infestation may be the leaves thinning out at the top of the tree.

FAQs

How long does it take to perform a tree injection?

Tree Injection is a relatively quick process, taking around 10 – 20 minutes to complete.

Will I be able to see the injection site?

If you look closely, you may be able to see small drill holes in the base of the trunk, but these holes are very minor.

Is it safe for my children/pets to play in the yard after a tree injection is performed?

Absolutely, yes. One of the advantages of Tree Injections over other pesticide applications is that there is no risk of overspray or human exposure. The chemical goes directly into the tree and no where else, making it perfectly safe for your family to enjoy the beauty of your yard without any worries.

The tree I want to treat is next to a body of water, is that safe?

Yes. With Tree Injections, there is no risk of chemical run-off or soil leaching.

Are tree injections harmful to pollinators?

At Local Arborist, we are committed to preserving trees and the ecosystems they are part of – including beneficial insects, such as pollinators. We do not use any chemicals that contain neonicotinoids, which have been linked to declining bee populations.

Testimonials

This is a most reliable, amazing company to deal with. They are prompt, efficient, and highly professional. I would give them 10 stars , if it was possible.

Kudos to the Marian’s team! The team has done an amazing job in pruning my pine tree today. My pine tree is over 70 feet and is slanted with branches heavier on one side. At my first contact with Marian, he provided me with a thorough explanation on the condition of my tree and laid out the pruning options. He is very knowledgeable and genuine in the conversation. Above all, he is not pushy at all on the job. After the pruning, the tree is thinned out to lift off some weight on the slanted side. The execution is well planned and thoughtful. Initially I was worried the tree would look bare, indeed the team knows the best to balance between health and aesthetic. The team is very careful with the cuts and since a lot of the work are done on my neighbour’s property, they did a thorough clean up after work too and my neighbour is very satisfied. Thank you so much guys, my tree looks healthier now and it opens up my yard too with more sunlight shining through the pines.

Thank you Marion, your team did a great job at my residence. I would highly recommend your services to anyone.

We had an amazing experience with the Local Arborist. We came to them after another company bowed out at the last moment, after the service had already been scheduled, explaining that our case was too difficult for them to take on. The Local Arborist saved us! They were prompt and communicative, and very transparent about pricing and potential obstacles. In the end, they were able to remove the tree earlier than the previous company would have done it.Marian kept in touch with me throughout the process on the day of the removal, and advised on the future replanting process. They even trimmed an adjacent tree for us while performing the removal. It was an extremely positive experience, and we look forward to working with the Local Arborist again in the future.

These guys were excellent. They were prompt, well coordinated and very professional. Great teamwork. The job went very smoothly. They finished on time, took away all of the debris and logs (it was a huge tree removed from the backyard, and huge stem cut from a tree in the front). They were even careful not to drop logs from too high to avoid getting holes and dings in our lawn. They completely cleaned up our yard and both of my neighbour’s’ yards. My neighbours were very pleased. They even blew off the decks and driveways. Very impressive, and the price was very reasonable. Marian even followed up with a phone call afterwards (and before the team left) to make sure that I was satisfied with the job. I would strongly recommend Marian and his team to anyone.
